Superintendent’s Highlight of the Week
December 2nd, 2016
In a world driven by Twitter, Facebook and other social media outlets, we thought it would be a good time of year to remind our students about being thoughtful of the digital footprint they leave behind as they communicate with their peers. “We are what we share” was the 21st century message of our recent district celebration of Digital Citizenship Week. The purpose of this week, organized by Laurie Lynn, our director of Guidance and Carolyn Tellone, our Coordinator of Libraries, was to discuss with our students what it means to use technology in a responsible and safe manner. Examples of using courtesy and kindness to cultivate good Netiquette were shared as students participated in grade-level themed lessons, online games and activities, school-wide assemblies and workshops. Students in all grades, K-12, were able to gain valuable insight about Internet safety and the importance of being aware of their digital footprint.
Officer Groshans, a certified school resource officer, made an evening presentation to apprise parents on how they could help keep their children safe while navigating the online world. We hope that by starting the conversation early, our students will be made aware of the benefits, as well as the risks associated with being members of an online community and using technology as a tool for communication.
Students ended the week with great lesson of internet safety and agreeing with this quote from Chris Betcher "In the future, your digital footprint will carry more weight than anything you might include on your resume." I feel certain that POB students are building better resumes as a result of this experience.
