Superintendent’s Highlight of the Week
January 29, 2016
This week’s highlight comes from Pasadena Elementary School. The students in Ms. Iannaccone’s and Ms. Nelson's second grade class got a visit from Karen Szczotka, a horse trainer from the North Fork of Long Island. The students are studying rural, urban and suburban communities for their social studies unit and were excited to meet a real farmer!
In anticipation of Farmer Karen’s visit, the children brainstormed questions about life as a farmer. Ms. Szcotka brought a horse bridle, a horse shoe and the Farmer’s Almanac for the students to experience first-hand. The students have been using the Farmer’s Almanac every week to check the weather forecasts and compare them to the actual weather. They were happy to see that she used the Farmer’s Almanac to track the weather as well. The students interviewed her and learned the differences between Farmer Karen’s life on rural Long Island compared to their lives in Plainview.
Who knows whether we will have a future farmer from this class as a result of this a wonderful visit?
