The Wonderful Thing About Tigers, Is Tigers are Wonderful Things
Mattlin Middle School sixth grade students recently raised enough money to adopt one tiger family, a group of cubs and two adult tigers. Approximately 50 students in Carolyn Loiacono’s English Language Arts classes read Can We Save the Tiger, a nonfiction piece by Martin Jenkins and researched the decreasing population of tigers. After discovering tigers are one of the most threatened species on earth, the students decided to collect recyclable cans and bottles and cash them in for funds to adopt tigers from the World Wildlife Fund.
Students recruited friends, families, local restaurants and bus drivers to donate their recyclables to help support the cause. During the project students wrote creative poems about tigers and even created an anthology. The project incorporated the students’ Social Studies, English Language Arts, Science and Math lessons and made the students more aware of wildlife conservation. Students learned to be mindful of how their actions could impact other living things.
